History

Otherwise known as "Hollywood on the Hudson" for its history of filmmaking, Fort Lee is 2.50 square miles, bordered on the north by Englewood Cliffs, on the south by Cliffside Park, on the west by Englewood and Palisades Park, and on the east by the Hudson River with its panoramic views of New York City. Despite its rapid commercial and population growth, Fort Lee still retains the charm one expects to find in a small town.

The town has a combination of attractive features. Moreover, Fort Lee's Ethnic & Cultural Heritage has been greatly diversified, and arrivals from all nations are settling in the borough. Fort Lee is named for the site of an American Revolutionary War military encampment. At the turn of the 20th century, it became the birthplace of the American film industry.

In 1931, the borough became the western terminus of the George Washington Bridge, which crosses the Hudson River and connects to the borough of Manhattan in New York City. Fort Lee's population and housing density increased considerably during the 1960s and 1970s with the construction of high-rise apartment buildings.
