History

New Milford is rich with the history of the revolution, including George Washington and the troops at the New Bridge Inn (built about 1739), which was the center of the action. Within New Milford, there was also a civil war where families were split apart. The attitude was one of wishful hoping that the trouble would pass away without disturbing the serenity of the valley. New Milford was incorporated as a borough on March 11, 1922, from what remained of Palisades Township, based on the results of a referendum held on April 18, 1922. With the creation of New Milford, Palisades Township (which had been created in 1871) was dissolved
